Sometimes you come across a DIY Dollar Tree Project that is so easy and versatile it's unbelievable! The day I spotted these candleholders (before I turned them into lanterns) I was actually looking for this year's Dollar Tree Elves.
Since I'm always on the lookout for easy DIY craft projects, I tend to quickly scan each aisle of the Dollar Tree when I'm there.
So while cruising down the aisle where candle holders are located, I stopped dead in my tracks when I spotted these candle holders.
I instantly knew the base could become a top and vice versa, creating an instant DIY Dollar Tree Lantern!
DIY DOLLAR TREE PLASTER LANTERNS
Personally, I fell in love with the color of gray/white since my mantle arch and candlestick holders are also gray/white. But you could easily paint these to match your home decor.
Regarding the tops and bases of these dollar tree candle holders, at first look they appear to be made from concrete. My inquisitive mind wanted to know since at first touch and then especially when I lightly sanded the top and bottom, I am pretty sure they are made of plaster instead.
Some may even want to call them cement or concrete. I would even venture to say it's made from Plaster of Paris.
Once I realized I wanted to make two Dollar Tree Lanterns, I'd need to buy 4 candlestick holders. This meant I would have 2 of the glass cylinder vases at the dollar tree left over.
So what do we crafty people do? We use the extra glass cylinder vases as DIY seasonal home decor!

DOLLAR TREE LANTERN INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1 – Gather Supplies
If you want to make 2 dollar tree lanterns as I did, you will need 4 dollar tree candle holders.
Note: When I was at the Dollar Tree they were out of my favorite "Poster Tack". If you are unable to find this product, you can use a strong double-sided tape instead to attach the fairy lights battery pack to the inside of the lid of the lantern.
STEP 2 – Lightly Sand Top and Bottom of all the Plaster Pieces
I used a sanding block but you could also use sandpaper such as a 400 Grit. It does not take hardly any sanding or pressure to make the tops, bottoms, and edges of the plaster candle holders. Some can even skip this step but mine was pretty rough and I wanted to protect my furniture and provide a smooth appearance.
STEP 3 – (Optional) Paint the Top and/or the Bottom of each Plaster Candle Holder
I preferred to paint just the tops of mine to make them look High-End instead of distressed after sanding.
STEP 4 – Attach Fairy Lights Battery Pack to Inside of Top Lantern Piece
Whether you use "Poster Tack" or "Double-sided Tape" make sure it's strong. The double-sided tape they sell at Dollar Tree is not strong enough for this project. So if you can't find the Poster Tack or a different brand of Poster Tack I would definitely get some strong double-sided tape. This is my all-time favorite strong tape. It can hold surge protectors up on a wall and not fall off. Plus, if you need to remove it, it will not leave any residue or damage. This tape is ah-Mazing!
Pull the battery tab from the battery pack of the fairy lights as seen below.
Cut a piece of tape or use some Poster Tack to place on the back of the battery pack. (the side with the little screws) This way, once you place the battery pack inside the lid, you will be able to open the battery pack to replace batteries when needed.
Next, remove the clear cover piece of tape to expose the sticky side and press firmly onto the inside of the lantern lid.
Then firmly push the battery pack into the inside of the lantern top piece as seen below.
Now we want to fold the part of the wire that has a plastic coating on it to fit alongside the battery pack. We don't want that coated wire to hang below the glass to be viewed. So we secure it with tape just like the battery pack.
STEP 5 – Adding Fairy Light Wire to Base and Cylinder Vase Piece
First, place the cylinder vase part on top of the candle holder base.
The fairy lights come coiled up in a circle shape. I found they look best in the end, if you first straighten them out, then put the tip of the end of the wire straight down into the glass cylinder and just start randomly pushing the rest of the fairy lights into the glass vase.
It sounds hap-hazard but the end result will look much more natural and pretty!
Now, when you want the fairy lights turned on, simply pull up the lid and move the on/off switch to the on position. If it is too tight of a fit, I use the tip of something, like a pair of scissors or hairpin, toothpick ETC.
I just love how easy these DIY Dollar Tree Lanterns are to make and the end result is stunning. Plus, the fact you have 2 extra glass cylinders to decorate for any holiday or occasion.
If you want to decorate yours with my FREE SVG files be sure to download them from my FREE Resource Library.
If you do not have a cutting machine, I'm sure you can find some cute stickers or some other way to decorate the glass part.
I'd love to see what you created.
